For example create a help-button near that question and when clicking on it opens a new small window showing a table, explaining how long you've go to school/study for every stage.
Or (more difficult) change the options when selecting the country, at least for bigger countries like France or Germany.
Especially on the mandrake-list (from where I have this link) there are many (mostly?) european developers.

form200~2~3~the views between open source and free software thus there is different behaviour, depending in what you believe. This can be seen in the different licenses (e.g. GPL vs. BSD) as well as in the products. Free software developers think proprietary software is unethically thus avoiding it whenever possible. There is no such feeling against it in open source, so incorperating proprietary softeware isn't seen as that bad and even allowed by several licenses.~3

OSS developers more often try to write readable, maintainable code, as they're always aware of the fact that other people are interested in contributing.
FS developers often don't care about that.

form900~1~I guess you are trying to find a connection between FS/OSS developments and their political interests.
I remember there were many research before about that issue, but their results were different -- there was no connection. I know "geeks" are easily assumed to be ignorant to politics -- but I think it is not because they are geeks, but because they are relatively young, live in relatively politically-stable countries, studied sciencies/technologies instead of human/cultural sciences, etc.
I hope you don't make an easy conclusion by a survey.

form400~1~1~0~1~1~3~2~There's also the feeling that "hey, no-one would ever pay for this programme anyway, but might enjoy it if it was for free" effect. Some of my software was originally under a shareware license, but I freed it after figuring out that noone was willing to pay for it, and after I found that there already were much better similar pieces of software (at least in some of the areas) that already was under a free license.

My point of view probably places me more into the FS camp than the OSS camp, but I don't care about that classification.
The reason I didn't choose "I don't care" is that I didn't want the selection to be misunderstand as I don't care about FS/OSS. It's just that I don't care about labeling myself in such a way.~2

form200~2~2~The answer to the previous two questions depends a lot upon context. Depending on what software one may be considering; the two can be both different in work or principle; or simply different in principle.
Usually; OSS projects have more open structures and are usually more welcome to take in other users to help their cause - to develop better software. This can, depending on the circumstance change the beliefs of the developers working on the project since they know that they are developing on part of a community and things are usually more organized to suit this: Bugzillas, patch submission areas and other things designed to help users. This usually changes the workflow of OSS projects dramastically compared to FS projects which often have either no, or too much structure.
Because of this willingness to take in aid from the void; I believe the work is different, and in a way more difficult and complicated - if you work for a company developing FS but not OSS software one person or team often ends up making all the decisions.
In an OSS project things are usually more distributed with everybody constructively helping in. No more "Leave it to the Sales Team" excuses. This could lead to developers striving to develop code with wider ideas or work on the code that they believe they do best on rather than striving to develop something with possibly more commercial motives.
Let's take an example: XFree86. This was forked to XOrg mainly due to these reasons. XFree86 was FS, but did not allow many the freedoms of OSS which allow fast-paced development: patches often a very long took time to get through all the bureaucracy while with an OSS project, people are more open to changes and developers accept and use the forces of continual change. For example, large OSS projects, say GNU/Linux distributions, allow developers to commit on a large portion of a product; not restricting them to making changes which management believes to be adequate to be let in or changes which management believes the person is trained or knowledgeable about.~1

form200~2~1~Open source system is when the source code is available when deployed. Other programmers may use or reuse the code with some agreed credits to the author. Initially the system may not be free as the client company pays for the services of the programmer(to develop the system). It becomes free when other programmers reuse it -- free for other to use.~2

By doing so, you deny the riht to anyone to sell parts of your jobs (without asking you before), and you will find one day this type of interesting information on the Internet without being able to use it in you profesional life. You'll certainly be disapointed, because one cannot spend days to ask to anybody is he can use his/her work... Free Software doesn't make such a distinction (commercial or non-commercial) and I find it really good. Benjamin Mako Hill (http://yukidoke.org/mako/) made a very interesting presentation at Free Software Meeting in 2003 and explained that FS and OSS were radically non-discriminative, so that they were largely adopted. You should consider forgetting doing such distinction (between commercial and non-commercial use).
Cheers !

form200~1~1~I understand the reasoning for both sides of GNU argument. I realise where Stallman and the GPL are getting their reasoning (and it is utopian), but it doesn't really allow one to make a living. The BSD-based licenses (and it's kin like the MIT/X licenses, etc) do allow for a developer to actually make a living off their development. Until developers are able to feed themselves and their families (and no, that is NOT second to any political motive), there will exist this chasm between FS and OSS.~3
form300~3~3~3~3~3~3~3
form400~0~2~99~99~2~3~3~Ultimately, choice. Without choice, you have stagnation and monopolies, and users adjusting themselves to software rather than the other way around. If you look at the world of Microsoft software you will see what my friend Rach Holmes calls "an acceptable and expected rate of failure." People _expect_ windows to freeze. People _expect_ to have to reinstall windows. People _expect_ security holes. And somehow these are acceptable.
FS/OSS makes that not acceptable, because the power to do something about it (rather than trust some binary patch -- really does it matter who signed it, you can't verify its contects).
